Kathy Hobson, ACC Coordinator for the Bald Eagle Breeding
Project, keeps a watchful eye on every step of the process.
Kathy has been involved in the replenishing effort for 15
years, and has released 77 eagles into the Catalina Islands.
“We currently have seven captive breeding pairs,” she
explains, “all of which were gravely injured in the wild and
unable to live on their own. We already have 15 new eggs,
which puts us on track for our best year ever.” Kathy is one
of the foremost experts in the U.S. in the area of bald eagle
recovery and repopulation. She has made major contributions to
dramatically restoring their numbers along the West Coast.
A grant for audio equipment was provided by a non-profit
organization where Edward Huser, VP of Development, is a
member. “After 9 11 we all wanted to do something to support
our country. Helping out the ACC to preserve our national
symbol seemed the least we could do.”
WorkForce OS volunteers have been involved in the Eagle
project for several years. “It started as a personal thing,”
says Susan Magrino, President and CEO. “I remember hearing
when I was in high school that there were only 35 Eagle pairs
left in the State of California. That really stuck with me
over the years. When I heard about the Zoo’s Conservation
Center, I volunteered to do whatever they needed.” Susan has
kept true to her word, painting enclosures, cleaning perches
and helping to re-build nests. “It isn’t all hard work,” Susan
continues. “Watching a baby eaglet break free from its egg is
incredible.”
WorkForce OS employees are as proud of their volunteer efforts
as they are their Talent Management software. “We want to make
a difference within our community. I think we have gotten far
more out of helping Kathy Hobson and her ACC team than we have
given,” Magrino added. “We encourage everyone to follow their
passion whether it’s for work or volunteer efforts!”
The Zoo’s off-exhibit ACC is one of a handful permitted to
hatch and repopulate the American Bald Eagle. Updates on the
progress of the project may be viewed at http://www.sfzoo.org/new/.
